Lawrence Police Creates Registry For Residents With Autism

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — The Lawrence Township Police Department announced it has created a registry for residents who have autism or any other communication disability.

The department made the announcement on Thursday morning via their Facebook page.

Police said the registry will give them “quick access to critical information about a person who is registered during an emergency situation.”

Many police departments in New Jersey have increased programs around autism awareness. From wearing special autism awareness badges to giving out stickers — the police department is making efforts to build understanding and awareness of the special needs community.

The Lawrence PD’s registry will provide officers with emergency contact information, detailed physical descriptions, the best way to communicate, known stressors/stress reducers, and much more.

This information, said the police department, will greatly assist officers in communicating when dealing with an emergency situation.

Once registered with the police, families will be given special stickers to display on cars and on the front door of their homes.
