Little Silver Wants Safer Streets For Cyclists, Walkers

Would Little Silver taxpayers support a referendum to build or enhance sidewalks and walking paths for cyclists and pedestrians?

LITTLE SILVER, NJ - Mayor Robert C. Neff writes in his monthly newsletter that the Borough Council will participate in a safe-streets analysis in order to gauge whether the borough can be made safer and kinder to walkers and those riding bicycles.

Neff warns the study will take some time and will include taking the community's pulse on whether it would fund a referendum to expand and improve the walkways.

This all began when the council recently discussed extending the sidewalk on Prospect Avenue, which currently stops just short of Crest Drive. The lack of sidewalk extends all the way to Harding Road, he explained.

That project - along with a variety of other proposed sidewalk improvements in town - would be an

expensive project, and while the town continues to seek grant funding to continue to improve its sidewalks, it also will explore other funding avenues.

This ultimately could include a referendum next year to gauge the public’s support and willingness to fund various sidewalk improvements, Neff said.

He noted no decisions have been made and the discussion will continue in the months ahead .
