Pittsburgh Man Drowns On Ocean Grove Beach: Police

Reports of a second victim were unfounded, police said

OCEAN GROVE, NJ – A Pittsburgh man died on Monday night after he was pulled from ocean waters here, Neptune police said.

Gabriel D’Abruzzo, 42, was saved by rescue swimmers and bystanders after police responded to the beach near McClintock Street on a report of a person in distress in the water, at 9:40 p.m. on July 9, according to a statement issued by the police department.

While others were administering first aid to D'Abruzzo, police began looking for a second missing swimmer, until 10:22 p.m., when it was confirmed that D’Abruzzo was the only victim, police said.

The Area Network of Shore Water Emergency Responders (A.N.S.W.E.R) Team, U.S. Coast Guard Shark River/Manasquan, the New Jersey State Police Marine Bureau, Neptune Township EMS, and the Neptune Township Office of Emergency Management assisted in the search for the second swimmer.

D’Abruzzo was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by Neptune Township EMS and MONOC and was later pronounced dead by emergency room doctors, police said.

The National Weather Service has warned of treacherous rip currents for several days and the danger of swimming on unguarded beaches or at night.
