Council Vacancy Pick, New Shared Court Member This Week

Council Vacancy: Madison's governing body is expected to appoint at its Monday meeting one of three Madison Republican Committee nominees to a vacant seat left by the resignation of Republican Councilwoman Jeannie Tsukamoto.

The replacement would serve until the end of the year, at which point whoever wins the two council seats up for vote in November would take office.

The Republican Committee chair has said he "would be pleasantly surprised" if they pick Pat Rowe, who is running with Councilman Rob Catalanello for the pair of Council seats up for election. Former councilmen Ed Rebholz and Martin Barbato are the other GOP nominees for the vacancy.

Catalanello and Rowe are running against against Democratic nominees Maureen Byrne and Jeff Gertler in the General Election.

The borough attorney said Rowe, Rebholz and Barbato should be given an opportunity during the meeting to address briefly why they ought to be appointed.

If the Madison Borough Council appoints Rowe, it will create another vacancy—this time on the Board of Education, where Rowe is vice president.

The meeting is scheduled for  8 p.m. Monday in Hartley Dodge Memorial, 50 Kings Road.

Joint Municipal Court: Madison could agree to a new shared court agreement that brings on board one more member this week. In addition to continuing participation by Chatham Borough, Chatham Township and Harding, another town—Morris Township—has signed on for the new year. The agreement still needs approval by all member towns and an assignment judge. The five communities would share the cost of running the court.

Board of Ed: The Madison school board is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Madison High School, 170 Ridgedale Ave.

Madison Farmers Market: The farmers' market is held every Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in front of the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts on the corner of Main Street and Green Village Road, through Oct. 17.

Medieval Minstrels: Trefoil, "a hearty trio of Medieval Minstrels," is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Saturday as part of da Camera Concerts at Drew. The critically acclaimed vocal/instrumental trio praised for their "clear, otherworldly harmonies" (New York Times).
