MADISON, NJ - The Madison community is rallying around former Madison High School Track and Field star RJ Graddy who lost his leg after an athletic event in Texas.

Friend Mike Quinn, who started a GoFundMe campaign on his behalf, noted that Graddy is "most accomplished jumper in the school's history."

"He suffered a tragic 'freak' accident in an athletic event recently, which severed an artery in his left leg and resulted in an amputation below his knee," Quinn wrote on the fundraiser page.

According to Quinn, after graduating college, Graddy pursued his career in his adopted city of Austin, Texas where the accident took place.

Quinn said the purpose of this GoFundMe is to help offset the Graddy family's travel and living expenses in Texas and for any subsequent medical costs incurred.

"His family has made the 1,700 plus mile trek from NJ to Texas to be with him during his procedures and rehab. It is enough of a burden for any parent have this happen to their child, but even worse with the long distance," Quinn said. "His Mom, Sharon, has been in Texas for a week with other family members, including Dad, Rudy, following her down."

Since the initial posting of the fundraiser, there has been a steady flow of support both financial and emotional.

"Such a sweet sweet human," Natalie Duffy wrote. "Sending all my love and prayers his way."

Jack Anderson noted that Graddy is a Dodger and will always be a Dodger and Jodi Zwain wished him luck in his recovery.

"You are strong, you can do this," Zwain said.

Quinn said that while Graddy is known for his athletic prowess, he is also one of the nicest and kindest people he has ever met.

"He volunteered countless hours during his time in both High School, and when he came home from college, to the Madison Youth Track & Field program," Quinn said. "Hundreds of kids that he taught the sport to know what a great person he is. I ask you to consider contributing to the fundraising effort."
