Mariners Compete at Silver Championships

Members of the YMCA Mariners swim team placed in the top 10 in two dozen events at the YMCA Silver Championships, a statewide competition held on February 14 and 15 at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, NJ. In all, 29 Mariners swam at this highly competitive meet, and four individuals and two relay teams swam so well that they qualified for the YMCA New Jersey State Championship meet.

Alison Barton won the 50-yard freestyle for 13- and 14-year-old girls with a short-course-yards time of 26.30 seconds, fast enough to qualify for the state championship.

The Mariners’ 9- and 10-year-old girls and boys had an exceptional meet individually and as relay teams. Julia Jadro finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:11.34 and third in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:20.26 – fast enough to qualify for the state championship in both events. She also placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle. Lola Morrison took third in the 50-yard breast stroke, qualifying for the state meet with a time of 43.18 seconds, and also placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke. And Emily Bohl took third place in the 100 breaststroke. The girls relay team of Jadro, Bohl, Juliana McGrath and Emilie Feldstein took fifth in the 200-yard medley relay in that age group. And Jadro, Feldstein, McGrath and Anya Rodrigo Candappa took fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Recognizing the challenges and limitations of its current facility, the Madison Area YMCA has launched a community fundraising campaign to expand the Y – building a new competitive, eight-lane pool – and to continue its mission of providing financial assistance to those in need. The Y’s goal is to sell 500 personalized pavers that will be used to create the sidewalk to the second entrance. The pavers, which cost $250 each, are four inches by eight inches and fit three lines of text that can honor family and friends. For more information about financial assistance or to make a donation, call 973-822-YMCA (9622) or go to madisonareaymca.org.
