Single-Use Plastic Ban Active In Madison Borough
Consumers need to stock up on reusable bags or pay for paper ones with each transaction.

MADISON, NJ - The Rose City plastic bag ban took effect on Sunday and now merchants will no longer be using plastic bags to package goods to customers.
The Madison Environmental Commission, in conjunction with Chatham Borough and Chatham Township Environmental Commissions presented the ordinance to the governing body for adoption and it became active March 1.
Bags for newspapers, dry cleaning, fresh produce, unwrapped foods such as fish and baked goods, prescription drugs, potted plants, cut flowers and items where wetness/dampness is an issue are exempted.

Consumers are asked to remember to carry a sufficient supply of reusable bags when shopping. Those without those bags may purchase a paper bag for 10 cents each. The store owner keeps the feed as in New Jersey it is not legal for towns to direct these fees to a dedicated fund.
The Madison Health Department has been designated by the ordinance as the enforcement agency. Those with questions can reach them by emailing plastic@rosenet.org or calling 973-593-3079 during normal business hours.
