Students 'Spike for the Cure' at Volleyball Tournament

Madison Junior School event supported American Cancer Society.

Seventeen teams of Madison Junior School students faced off in the school gym to raise money for the American Cancer Society as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Oct. 10 tournament was the second organized by the Madison Junior School Student Council. The event supports a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk team organized by Madison teachers.

“Last year was a great success and the students wanted to participate in the challenge again this year to raise breast cancer awareness and support the American Cancer Society,” student council adviser Stephen Finkelstein said.

The volleyball tournament led into “Pink Week” at the junior school, which included additional fundraisers.

The Student Council sold pink bracelets, buttons, T-shirts, and retired sports jerseys and shorts during lunch. Teachers throughout the district were invited to wear denim to school in exchange for making a donation.

All proceeds supported Team Bungo at the Making Strides walk on Sunday, Oct. 20, in Parsippany. It was the 14th year for the team, which formed after teacher Liz Bungo, who recently retired, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The team has raised more than $100,000 since it started.
