Roving Naturalist

Saturday, March 2 at 9 a.m.

Saturday, March 30 at 9 a.m.

Tatum Park, Middletown - Meet in the Holland Activity Center parking area.

Join our Roving Naturalist for a walk and discuss seasonal points of interest, search for signs of wildlife, and identify a bird or two. This is a 1.5-2 hour program, but feel free to join in or drop out at any point. Dress for the weather as light rain is not a deterrent. FREE!

Cookstove Demonstration

Saturday, March 2 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Historic Longstreet Farm, Holmdel

See what the farm staff is cooking on the wood-fired stove. Discover how recipes, cooking techniques and kitchens have changed since the 1890s. FREE!

Open Ceramics

Sunday, March 3 from 12:30-4:30 p.m.

Thompson Park Creative Arts Center, Lincroft

Choose from a large selection of bisque fired pottery pieces to glaze and make your own. Children age 12 and under are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $6 per hour plus price of bisque ware; cash or check only. Pieces will be fired in about a week.

Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, Howell - Meet in the parking lot.

Wednesday, March 20 from 10-11:30 a.m.

Clayton Park, Upper Freehold - Meet in the Emley’s Hill Road parking lot.

Tatum Park, Middletown - Meet in the Holland Activity Center parking lot.

Say “farewell” to the frigid weather as you join a Park Naturalist on a peaceful trail walk through the park. FREE!

Spinning and Knitting Demonstration

Saturday, March 9 from 1-3 p.m.

Historic Longstreet Farm, Holmdel

Be inspired to learn an old craft as Jodey Forbes demonstrates the art of spinning fleece as well as various stitches in knitting. FREE!

Garden Dreams

Saturday & Sunday, March 9 & 10 from 1-4 p.m.

Historic Walnford, Upper Freehold

Thumb through historical garden catalogues, research and more and discover how the landscape has changed across the centuries. FREE!

E. Murray Todd Half-Marathon

Sunday, March 10 at 8:30 a.m.

Brookdale Community College, Lincroft

Race-day registration for this 13.1-mile race starts at 7 a.m. On-site registration is $60 per runner (cash or check only).

Blacksmith Demonstration

Sunday, March 10 from 1-3 p.m.

The Casual Birder

Thursday, March 14 at 9 a.m.

Dorbrook Recreation Area, Colts Neck - Meet in the Athletic Field parking area.

Join a Park System Naturalist for this laid-back morning bird walk. We’ll meander for about 1.5 hours and see what birds we can find. No need to be an expert at identifying birds to enjoy this walk. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow if needed. FREE!

Join our Trails Team

Saturday, March 16 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Thompson Park Visitor Center, Lincroft

Prospective volunteers (age 16 and up) are invited to this training workshop that serves as an introduction to Park System safety rules, tools and equipment, and maintenance overview. After attending the workshop, volunteers can assist during trail work sessions throughout the season. FREE!

Nature Lecture Series: The Piping Plover Population of Monmouth County

Thursday, March 21 from 7-8 p.m.

Bayshore Waterfront Park Activity Center, Port Monmouth

Join a Park System Naturalist for this discussion on the recovery process of the piping plover, including its successes and challenges, and future efforts needed to delist this still vulnerable population. FREE!

First Saturday in Spring Night Hike

Saturday, March 23 from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Freneau Woods Park, Aberdeen - Meet in the Visitor Center parking area.

Explore the woods and wetlands with a Park System Naturalist and listen and look for owls, foxes, spring peepers and other nocturnal creatures. Then look for animal tracks down by the water. Participants should dress for the weather. Trails are usually muddy in the spring. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight. Open to ages 8 and up; under 18 with adult.FREE!

Open Shoot Archery

Sunday, March 24 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Thompson Park Activity Barn, Lincroft

All equipment is provided, no outside equipment permitted, during this non-instructional program designed for those already familiar with archery techniques. Open to ages 10 and up; under 18 with adult. The cost is $10 per person; cash or check only.
