Antler Alert Issued for New Jersey Through December

Deer mating season is underway, and those majestic creatures are crossing busy roads more than ever.

An antler alert has been issued for the entire state by New Jersey Police, which lasts through December. Drivers are asked to remain cautious.

In 2010, the insurance industry estimated over 30,000 deer were hit by cars in the state, according to a news release.

Below are tips offered for drivers:

• Upon spotting a deer, try to slow down and watch for sudden movements.
• Look for “Deer Crossing” signs and exercise caution in those areas; there is most likely a high concentration of deer in the area.
• Use high beams when there are no vehicles approaching from opposite 
• directions. High beams will be reflected by the eyes of the deer.
• In the event of a collision, hold the steering wheel, don’t swerve, and bring the vehicle to a complete stop on the shoulder. Swerving to avoid a deer or other animal can cause a much more serious crash.
