Colts Neck Native Al Golden Eyed for Rutgers

With Kyle Flood out, who will be the new Rutgers University football coach?

Colts Neck native Al Golden is being named as among the top three candidates for the job, according to reports.

Golden, 46, got his start coaching locally, as the offensive coordinator at Red Bank Catholic High School in 1993. He also graduated from Red Bank Catholic, where he played. He went on to play football at Penn State, where he was team captain.

He briefly played in the NFL, as a tight end with the New England Patriots in 1992.

Golden was most recently the coach at the University of Miami, but he was fired in October after overseeing the worst loss in the school’s history (58-0 to Clemson). At the time of his firing, he was raking in $2.5 million a season.

Before Miami, Golden was head coach at Temple, and before that as an assistant coach at Virginia, Boston College and Penn State.

Former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano and current Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck are two other top contenders for the job.
