Marlboro Only Town in State to Make Gas Station Generators Mandatory

The ordinance gives gas station owners three years to acquire a backup generator system, to avoid power loss and massive fuel outages during natural disasters.

According to USA Today, Marlboro Township is the only town with an ordinance on the books to mandate generators in township gas stations.

The ordinance was voted on by the Town Council in May, a response to the crisis New Jersey residents found themselves in during a gas shortage in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The ordinance gives gas station owners three years to acquire a backup generator system, to avoid power loss and massive fuel outages during natural disasters.

Some Marlboro Township residents were without power for more than a week, relying on fuel-powered generators for warmth.

The gas shortage hit close to home with one Marlboro Township family. In an effort to find gas, the Cano family's wheelchair accessible van broke down and had to be abandoned.

With power out in the Cano house, temperatures dropped dangerously low as their generator only powered their daughter's nebulizer.

The family was then transported to a relative's home by the Marlboro Police Department.

According to USA Today, Gov. Chris Christie announced a $7 million federal grant program which would allow retail gas suppliers access to back-up power during an emergency.

USA Today also reported that several towns in New Jersey thought about an ordinance similar to Marlboro Township's, but never made them final.
