Marlboro Baseball Star Chosen In MLB Draft

LINCROFT, NJ — A young man who grew up in Marlboro, and was a former All-State baseball catcher at Christian Brothers Academy, was drafted by the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

Yes, Brandon Martorano, 21, was drafted as the 16th round draft pick (the 476th pick overall) in the MLB draft. Martorano was born in Staten Island, but he grew up in Marlboro Township. He attended Christian Brothers Academy (CBA), a prestigious, all-boys Catholic school located in Lincroft.

Martorano is currently a junior at the University of North Carolina, which he attends with his fellow CBA alum Luca Dalatri, according to NJ.com. It's unknown at this point whether he will play for the San Francisco Giants next season, or complete his senior year at UNC.

It's an understatement to say Martorano was a standout coming up at CBA: He and Dalatri led Christian Brothers to be the number-one ranked baseball team in the entire state of New Jersey.

The Christian Brothers community is now thrilled to watch Brandon play baseball at the professional level.

Being selected in the MLB Draft and getting the opportunity to live out your dreams is something every baseball player grows up wanting," said CBA Athletic Director Vito Chiaravalloti in a statement provided exclusively to Patch. "Again, Brandon has proven to be an exceptional player and gets the chance to prove it at the next level. With all his accomplishments on the field, CBA is even more proud of the impact he has made off of it, especially how he has continued to serve as a man for others in UNC Chapel Hill community.”

Martorano started all 61 games for North Carolina this spring, NJ.com reports.
