64-Year Mendham Fire Veteran Passes Away

Firefighter Willard "Bill" Bergman died with his family at his side on Saturday.

Firefighter Willard "Bill" Bergman passed away at the Merry Heart Nursing Home in Succusunna this past Saturday, according to an article published in the Daily Record. The Madison-born Morris County native was 96 years of age.

Bergman devoted his life to fighting fires with the Mendham Fire Department, according to an obituary published in the Daily Record. Bergman joined the Fire Department in 1952 and served as an active member for more than 64 years. The Mendham Fire Department is only a few decades older, at 111 years.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Elizabeth"Betty" Newton Bergman, two sons, Willard Bergman, Jr. of Flanders and Bruce Bergman of Independence; one daughter, Jane Bergman of Chester Twp., his 5 beloved grandchildren Thomas Bergman, Kimberly Barrineau, Jennifer Webb, Dennis Bergman and Marc Bergman; 7 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren, according to the piece published in the Daily Record.

Visitation will be held today, September 21, 2016 from 4 to 8 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Hilltop Road, Mendham. Funeral services on Thursday, September 22 at 10:30 AM at the Hilltop Presbyterian Church, Mendham.
