How To Keep Your Home Safe While On Vacation: Mendham PD Tips

Going on vacation is an exciting time-- don't come home to a burglary.

MENDHAM, NJ — Going away for vacation is an exciting time, but coming home to find something wrong is not. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to avoid having your home targeted by thieves and burglars when you're away. Here are some safety tips from the Mendham Township Police Department:

  • Put lights on timers across your home at random times during the evening/night; do not leave the lights on during the day!
  • Stop your mail and newspaper deliveries or have someone pick both of them up so they do not accumulate.
  • Be mindful of social media post indicating you are away
  • Continue to have your driveways plowed in you absence in the event of snow
  • Do not leave cars in the driveway or garage with keys in them
  • Let a trusted neighbor(s) know you will be away and who, if anyone, is permitted to be at the house so they can report any suspicious activity
  • Ensure your alarm system has been serviced and in good working order and set it upon your departure.
  • Register your house with us for a Vacant home check and we will check on it while your away. This can be done by stopping by our HQ during business hours or give us a call anytime. Be prepared to give us a contact number as well as who is permitted to be on the property in your absence.
