North Jersey Catholics: Meat OKed For Friday's St. Paddy's Day

Instead of fasting, Church officials suggest giving back to charity.

MENDHAM, NJ— North Jersey Catholics looking forward to corned beef and cabbage on Saint Patrick's Day can enjoy it guilt free: The Diocese of Paterson has said its okay to eat meat on this particular Lenten Friday.

The Rev. Arthur Serratelli, a bishop in the diocese, has said all Catholic in the area will be allowed to eat meat on St. Patrick's Day. Most Catholics abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent.

The Diocese of Paterson includes all of Sussex, Passaic and Morris Counties. Each individual Diocese makes the decision about allowing meat or not.

Serratelli recommended that Catholics honor Saint Patrick by contributing to a charity in place of abstaining from meat.
