MENDHAM TWP, NJ — The bear population is out for the season, and Mendham Township Police want residents to be aware of how to handle the animals.
Six MTPD officers are certified Bear Officers by the NJ Department of Fish and Game, and can handle nuisance bear. If you see a nuisance bear (any bear that enters your garage, does damage, won't leave your property, or anything similar), call the local police department.
Bears are frequently spotted in and around the Mendhams, and usually aren't an issue. The best way to avoid having bears in your yard is to limit the things that attract them. Lock up garbage, make sure your grill is clean, and limit bird feeders.
