CHESTER, NJ — One person was injured in a "serious" crash at the Route 206 and Furnace Road intersection Tuesday morning, Chester police said.

Joseph S. Rusyn, 25, of Roxbury, was trying to make a left turn off of Furnace Road onto Route 206 around 9 a.m. when he was struck by a car driven by Lucia Gutierrez-Andrade, 33, from Maryland, Chester police said.

Police and firefighters had to free Gutierrez-Andrade from inside her car, where she was trapped. She was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment. Rusyn refused treatment, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The crash forced the closure of the intersection for about three hours, police said.

The intersection of Route 206 and Furnace Road has been the sight of a number of serious, sometimes fatal, crashes over the years. It's currently regulated only by a stop sign, and has no light, turn lane, or jug handle. Residents have been calling for a traffic light for years, but those calls earned new vigor in November 2018 when a grandmother and her 5-year-old granddaughter were killed in a crash.
