NORTH JERSEY — Severe storms are possible Wednesday, in addition to intense heat and a chance of hail in northern New Jersey, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms and hail are also possible ahead of a cold front. Storms "could become severe later today over the Northeast," forecasters with the National Weather Service said.

As for the storm timing: The chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives after 4 p.m. Southwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

According to The Weather Channel, storms are most likely to move over the area between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

It will also be hot, with high temperatures approaching the 90s. Cooler air is expected to return Thursday.

Things will clear for Thursday, with more rain possible Friday. As of now, the holiday weekend forecast isn't looking bad, with plenty of sun in store for Memorial Day.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 1 a.m., then a slight chance of showers between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Patchy fog after 3 a.m.. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday: Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 77. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 52. North wind around 5 mph.

Friday: Rain, mainly after 2 p.m.. High near 61. East wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Friday Night: Rain, mainly before 2 a.m.. Low around 46. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of rain before 8 a.m., then a chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 46.

Memorial Day: Sunny, with a high near 71.
