Millburn Township resident and author Joan Bowman will once again open her historic home to guests, for a Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society event this Sunday, April 17, from 3 to 5 p.m.
Bowman recently published her memoir, The Power of the Place, and will read brief excerpts from the book, which includes memories of growing up in her grandfather's Long Branch mansion (The Place) with French governesses and a chauffeur to take her to school.
Guests are also invited to tour the first floor of her historic Short Hills Park home, which was once home to the Short Hills post office. The historic home was renovated by the previous owner and elegantly decorated by Bowman, who is also a busy interior decorator.

For many visitors, one of the many highlights of the house is the diminutive area under the front hall stairs, which Bowman decorated as a tiny and tidy play area with child-sized chairs and a tiny china cabinet filled with doll-sized tea cups and saucers. Because seating is limited, guests are asked to call the historical society at 973-564-9519 for reservations. Guests will receive the home address upon making reservations.
Light refreshments will be served and there is a nominal $10 charge, which is waived if guests purchase the $30 book, The Power of the Place."
