June 24, 2020

The Short Hills Garden Club (SHGC) recently performed some significant and much needed maintenance to the Millburn-Short Hills Community Garden, located in downtown Millburn. The work was made possible by a generous grant from the New Jersey Committee of the Garden Club of America. This grant allowed for the installation of a new irrigation system and the replacement of an old and dilapidated fence. The work commenced in mid-April and was completed in time for the growing season.

These improvements will help to ensure that the residents of Millburn/Short Hills can continue to garden in a well-maintained and functioning environment. Community Garden Co-Chair Diane Rothenberg stated: “The grant will help to make sure that the property remains viable and productive, and fruits and vegetables can be grown locally. This contributes to the greater good of our community, sustainable agriculture, and conservation of the overall environment.”

SHGC members have been the stewards of the Millburn Community Garden since 1975. In 2013, it became the first community garden in New Jersey to be accepted into the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Gardens. The garden contains 85 plots and is open to all Millburn/Short Hills residents.
