Millburn Earns 1st Round Victory in Krug Tourney

Defending champion Millers seek a sixth tournament title next week.

Led by senior Anthony DelGreco's five runs batted in, the Millburn High baseball team posted an emphatic 18-1 victory over Roselle Catholic in the first round of the 11th Annual Phil "Wally'' Krug Tournament Saturday, April 14, in Millburn.

Millburn (4-2), the defending champion, will be seeking its sixth overall Krug championship when it faces Warren Hills (5-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21. Roselle Catholic and Moorestown will meet in the consolation game at 11 a.m. that day.

DelGreco ignited the Millburn attack with a two-run homer to deep left center in the first inning and added a two-run single in the second inning before capping his day with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Juniors Bradley Bean (2-for-3, two runs, stolen base), Benji Dweck (1-for-3, three RBI), and Donald Misiak (2-for-2, RBI) also contributed to Millburn's 14-hit attack. Misiak, who entered the game in relief in the second inning, earned his first varsity pitching victory by hurling two and two-thirds scoreless innings.

The Millers split a pair of Super Essex Conference American Division games this week. On Tuesday, Millburn exploded for nine runs in its final two at bats to rally for a 10-5 victory over Livingston. Sophomore David Talpalar pitched five and one-third innings to earn his second victory of the season and sophomore Evy Ruibal blasted his second home run of the season. On Friday (April 13) Millburn dropped a narrow, 4-3 decision to West Essex.

Millburn is currently tied for first place in the SEC American with a 3-1 record in league contests. The Millers play three league games this week (at Montclair on Monday, April 16; at home vs. Nutley on Wednesday, April 18, and at home vs. Bloomfield on Friday, April 20) before the Krug championship game on Saturday.
