Millburn Has Its First 2 Coronavirus Deaths; Maplewood Total Is 3

Essex County released updated numbers as of 9 a.m. for each town and countywide.

MILLBURN, NJ — As of 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Essex County officials reported that two residents of Millburn had died from coronavirus, the first two cases reported in that town. And a third Maplewood resident has died, after Mayor Frank McGehee had reported a second death the night before.

The numbers are from the state's Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System, which tracks communicable diseases. The numbers may be entered into the state database at a different time than they are released by local officials.

Statewide, 1,003 New Jersey residents have died of the virus, said Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday afternoon. He said the next two weeks could be the peak for cases in New Jersey.

The U.S. surgeon general said Sunday that the next weeks could be the "hardest and saddest" the country has seen.

In Essex County, 5,042 people have been diagnosed with the virus, as of Tuesday morning.
