Millburn Keeps the Krug Cup Another Year

Rally brings Millers from behind to win the Wally Krug tournament championship game.

Senior Anthony DelGreco continued his torrid hitting and Millburn rallied from two early deficits to defeat Warren Hills, 8-6, for its second consecutive Wally Krug Tournament championship Saturday. It marks the sixth time in the 11-year history of the tournament that the host Millers (7-3) have managed to keep the Krug Cup at home.

DelGreco, who had a home run and five RBI in Millburn's first-round victory over Roselle Catholic last Saturday, picked up right where he left off with an RBI double and a game-clinching three-run homer, giving him a total of nine RBI in Krug competition. DelGreco was named the MVP.

Senior Will Fitzgerald, a three-year starter and an All-Essex County center fielder in 2011, made the defensive play of the day when he ranged far to track down a long fly ball in the seventh inning. The catch proved to be significant when Warren Hills (6-4) staged a late rally that fell just short. Fitzgerald, who also had two hits on the day, was named the Outstanding Defensive Player of the tournament.

Juniors Don Misiak (2-0) and James Mynott combined to keep the powerful Warren Hills lineup in check. Misiak, who was the winning pitcher in both Krug victories, worked the first four innings, allowing just two earned runs. Mynott worked the final three innings to notch his first save of the season. Losing pitcher Kyle Allen, who ripped a bases loaded triple in the seventh inning, was named the Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament.

Millburn also earned a pair of pivotal victories within the American Division of the Super Essex Conference this week. On Wednesday, sophomore Milo Freeman was the hero in a 6-5 come from behind victory over Nutley.Freeman drove in the winning run with a walk-off single to deep center and also earned the mound victory by working a scoreless seventh inning.
