Millburn Tennis Courts Open Thursday, Other Coronavirus Updates

Also: Changes in local coronavirus notifications, updated nursing home statistics, school updates, and more.

MILLBURN, NJ —Millburn Mayor Jackie Lieberberg said in her nightly coronavirus update on Wednesday that the municipal tennis courts would open on Thursday for members. She noted:

  • All members utilizing the township’s tennis courts must follow the guidance and rules set forth by the Recreation Department. To sign up for a membership and review the township’s guidelines for court usage, please visit the township recreation webpage.

The mayor also said there have been 125 confirmed cases of residents with coronavirus in Millburn Township as of Wednesday, and 62 percent have recovered. There have been a total of five fatalities among residents linked to coronavirus.

In New Jersey, there have been 8,549 fatalities as of Wednesday.

Last Thursday, Gov. Phil Murphy said 460 New Jerseyans had been lost to the virus in 24 hours, an all-time high rate, or one person every three minutes. On Tuesday afternoon, the governor said there had been 334 deaths since the previous day, bringing the total that day to 8,244 people.

In her nightly update, Lieberberg also said that starting next week, coronavirus updates will go out by email on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. and Fridays by voicemail at 4 p.m.

RECREATION

  • This past weekend, the Township’s Par 3 golf course was set to open with new guidelines and safety precautions. No cash will be accepted at the course. Payments will be made with Visa or MasterCard only.

NURSING HOMES

  • The state said this week that they will start to tackle the spread of the virus in long-term care facilities, although residents have disputed the death toll numbers that the facilities have reported to the state. This week, the state they will make changes, including bringing the National Guard to some nursing homes to help supplement staff. In other states, the Guard was brought in to help clean and staff their facilities last month.

SCHOOLS

  • Millburn schools have been closed since mid-March. This week, Gov. Phil Murphy said New Jersey schools will be closed for the rest of the year. He said he was not sure yet about day camps and day cares.
  • Last week, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christine Burton released a distance learning update. She wrote, "As the K-5 overview explains, we will be providing more face-to-face time with teachers on a daily basis. Teachers may check in with students at the beginning of the day to set the stage for the day's learning or meet up at the end of the day to provide closure. They will also offer live lessons each day in core content areas such as Reading and Math." Read more here, and for the middle school, here.

  • Stores in the area are offering special senior hours. Read more.

  • Saina and Amay Balsara are creating and distributing 30-40 care packages each day of healthy snacks and drinks to front line workers at local hospitals. Each day they are personalizing each one with encouraging words of gratitude & drawing artwork on the paper bags.
