Scholarship Set Up In Name Of Millburn Teen Who Passed Away

A scholarship has been named after Short Hills resident Robbie Almgren who passed away suddenly over Christmas weekend.

MILLBURN, NJ — Friends and family of Millburn High School senior Robbie Almgren, who passed away on Dec. 27, have set up a scholarship fund in his honor.

The mission statement for the Robbie Almgren Athletic Scholarship Fund states: "The Robbie Almgren Athletic Scholarship Fund was established by friends and family as a tribute to the memory of Robbie Almgren, a senior at Millburn High School who passed away in late December of 2020. Robbie was a down-to-earth, humble, warm-hearted and loyal friend to all who crossed his path. He was a uniquely-talented athlete who not only excelled in every sport he played but also was a model of true sportsmanship and leadership."

It notes that Almgren had committed to playing lacrosse at Union College in August 2020. The scholarshiop will be awarded to a senior at Millburn High School who has committed to a college athletic program and who embodies the character and spirit of Almgren.

An outdoor service has been planned on Jan. 9 for Almgren, described as a "kind-hearted classmate" by Schools Superintendent Christine Burton.

Almgren's obituary said he began to feel the sudden effects of undetected AML leukemia on Christmas night. He died due to a brain hemorrage at St. Barnabas hospital two days later.
