Scouts BSA Troop 19 - Engineered To Do Great Things and Have Fun
Female Scouts used ropes and wooden spars joined by lashings and knots to build a 75-foot inverted trestle bridge.
There is a saying, "Scientists dream about great things. Engineers do them!" This was the calling for eight inspiring young women of Scouts BSA Troop 19, chartered at St. Rose of Lima Church, Short Hills.
As a cohesive unit, the Scouts used ropes and wooden spars joined by lashings and knots to build a 75-foot inverted trestle bridge to earn their pioneering merit badge at Mt. Allamuchy Scout Reservation.
"It was so fun to learn to use our knots and make a structure.", said Scout Natalie Daniewski.

"I would recommend pioneering because it uses everything you learn in Scouts. It's very fun and uses some of the lashings, ropes and knots that you may not have used before. Many activities before today required something a bit more simplistic. This was a great opportunity as I learned allot.", said Second Class Scout Juliette Dominguez.
"This activity was really fun, as it help us learn teamwork. We also learned lashings and knots that we hadn't used before.", said Second Class Scout Penny Williams.

"Around the world, Scouting uses pioneering to teach Scout skills that are not just about cool things to do with ropes, knots, and wooden spars. Today Scouts learned about teamwork, engineering, determination and what they can accomplish when they work together. What a great day!", said Troop 19 Advancement Chair Raul Arrazcaeta.
