Millburn Scout Troop Feeds 300 Families On One Day

Short Hills Troop 19 was able to provide a holiday dinner thanks to community donations.

MILLBURN, NJ — As a caring faith community, St. Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills annually organizes a Thanksgiving turkey and food drive to help struggling families with dinner meals for the national holiday.

In support of those in need, Scouts BSA Troop 19 had a dozen Scouts and Scouters provided a youthful spirited hand to the parish volunteers in amassing hundreds of meals from parishioners and community families. Each donor dropped off bags of non-perishable food and turkeys in the St. Roses' parking lot, this past Saturday morning.

"According to the Scouts Law, we are to be helpful and we are definitely being helpful today by organizing food for families in need. I think that it is a great example for new scouts. I am happy to be helpful today.", said Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Maanya Jha.

"Great to see our troop come together and work towards a common goal, which is to provide the community with food for this holiday of Thanksgiving.", said Senior Patrol Leader Morgan Lomax.

"There are 9 different charities throughout Essex and Union county that we help. Last year, we were able to help over 300 families with a dinner for four, including a turkey with all the side dressings. I am hoping we can do the same this year.", said St. Rose of Lima Thanksgiving Dinner Basket Donation Program Coordinator, Mike Roberts. "Having the Scouts help us has been instrumental. I think it's a great program for them to learn that there are people less fortunate than we are. I am sure it helps in modeling the Scouts to be the good neighbors that they are."
