American Express Uses Montclair To Film 'Shop Small' Video Ad

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair made the spotlight on Thanksgiving when American Express used the township as a backdrop for its latest ad campaign supporting small businesses.

The video, which offers a view of Valley Road, got a warm reception from Montclair Councilman Peter Yacobellis, who previously served in a chief of staff role for the Global Advertising and Brand Management (GABM) team at American Express.

“With many current and former employees calling Montclair home, it's no surprise to me that the company chose our special corner of the world to make this heartfelt ad in support of the small businesses that give our town so much of its charm and character,” Yacobellis said. “I hope through holidays and in the winter months ahead, residents continue to shop and dine small and help support businesses when they most need it.”

Yacobellis offered a thumbs-up to chief marketing officer Elizabeth Rutledge and the entire GABM team for what he called a “love letter to Montclair.”

The “Shop Small” ad isn’t the first time that Montclair and American Express have made a local connection.

In June, Montclair resident Glenda McNeal became a member of the company's executive committee, making her the first African American woman to sit on the board.

In 2013, the Montclair Center Business Improvement District helped support more than 400 local merchants, partnering with American Express for the Rally Your Neighborhood Program, which included free Shop Small bags, welcome mats and free parking.
