MONTCLAIR, NJ — A vehicle with four men inside fled from a Montclair police officer during a “suspicious” encounter earlier this week, authorities said.

The Montclair Police Department released the following details about the incident, which took place on Bellegrove Drive on Tuesday:

“At approximately 2:40 a.m., an officer on patrol observed a red Ford Edge travelling slowly north on Bellegrove Drive and stop in the middle of the road. The front seat passenger began to exit the vehicle, but upon seeing the approaching patrol car, got back inside of the Ford, which then fled at a high rate of speed. Upon reaching the dead end, the vehicle entered Yantecaw Brook Park. The vehicle continued through the park and out onto Yantecaw Brook Road. The officer went around the block and located the Ford on Alexander Avenue in the area of Stonehenge Road without its headlights on. The vehicle then fled down Stonehenge Road and entered Tuers Park before exiting and making its way back onto Alexander Avenue. The vehicle was last seen north on Broad Street, entering Clifton.”
