MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair Animal Shelter has come a long way since being ravaged by a fire more than two years ago. And dozens of dogs and cats who now have new forever homes have a big-hearted community to thank.
Last weekend, the municipally run shelter took part in the annual “Clear the Shelters” event, temporarily waiving adoption fees on certain animals. The push paid off; 15 cats and 12 dogs were adopted out, according to a town news release.
In addition to the adoptions, the shelter also received $200 in cash and $200 in donated supplies during the event, which took place on Aug. 18 and 19.

Nearly 200 visitors walked through the shelter’s doors at its recently renovated 77 North Willow Street location. Luckily, a trained staff and 20 volunteers were on hand to help keep things running smoothly.
“We’re really pleased with the adoption numbers from the weekend drive,” Shelter Director Liz Morgan said. “Seeing so many once homeless dogs and cats finding families to adopt and give them loving care is truly rewarding. I’m really proud of our staff and volunteers – they saw to every detail.”

The Montclair shelter was one of 80 facilities in the Tri-State region to participate in the national event this year. But the event in Montclair was special, considering that two years ago, the entire building was left in pieces following a huge fire.
The blaze – which took place in the rear of the facility and caused severe damage – didn’t injure any animals. But it left the facility closed and its furry residents temporarily homeless… a situation that the local community didn’t allow to exist for long.

On June 13, following more than two years of repairs, the shelter once again opened its doors to the public (see below video).
