Essex County Voters Will Leave New 'Verified Paper Trail' In 2021

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Getting ready to vote in the 2021 primary election in Essex County? It may pay off to take a few minutes to watch a video from local election officials.
Essex County will debut a new, voter-marked paper balloting system, with a "verifiable paper trail" for use in elections beginning in 2021.
The Essex County Board of Elections recently shared a video that demonstrates how to use the new system – and what to expect on election day. Watch it below.

The county announced last year that it was investing $3.8 million to buy new voting machines as a way to safeguard future elections. The purchase of the new machines came after the request of several voter advocacy groups, including SOMA Action's Voting Rights Committee and BlueWaveNJ, who had expressed concern about local election safeguards.
