The fire appears to be accidental, caused by combustible materials located too close to the stove, as determined by the Fire Department Investigation Unit.

Prior to the firefighters’ arrival, police units in the area began evacuating tenants from the first floor. The police continued to assist occupants from other floors while the firefighters worked the fire, authorities said.

Montclair was assisted at the fire scene by the West Orange Fire Department and covered by East Orange and Clifton Fire Departments.
