The Montclair Public Library has announced a whole host of October programs for kids, teens, and families.

 

The Montclair Public Library’s Youth Services Department is pleased to announce its October programs for kids, teens, and families, including a Teen Advisory Board meeting, Hispanic Heritage Music concert, and Thrilloween party. All Youth Services programs are free.

Registration is required for all of these programs unless otherwise noted. Montclair card holders receive priority registration. Register by calling: (973) 744-0500 ext. 2236.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Teen Advisory Board Wednesday, October 3 at 6:30 p.m. What can the Library do for teens? Do you have ideas? Do you want to make a difference? The Teen Advisory Board offers programming suggestions to the Library, assists in arranging book displays, posts event fliers around town, and discusses relevant books and current films. It is a proactive group that gives teens the potential to make real and positive changes in a public space. Community service hours are given to those who attend. Appropriate for teens in grades 6-12. In the Young Adult Room.

Homeschooling Meeting Thursday, October 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Network, meet other homeschooling families and find out what the library can do for your family. Orgullo: Hispanic Heritage Music Tuesday, October 9 at 4:00 p.m. “Orgullo” means one thing to all Latin Americans: pride. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with songs from Puerto Rico, Cuba and Mexico as performed on acoustic guitar by musician Deivis Garcia. Songs will be performed in the traditional “Guaracha” or “Jibaro” styles, typified by folk music from “el campo,” rural areas throughout Latin America. Appropriate for everyone ages 4 and up.

Drop-in Craft: Make Your Own Instruments Wednesday, October 10 at 4:00 p.m. Crafts are a great way to share time with your little ones. Create your own instrument using recyclable material while learning songs and dancing. Appropriate for children ages 4 and up. No registration required.

World Food Day Movie: The Greenhorns Wednesday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m. World Food Day is October 16! Learn all about it through this engaging documentary which explores the lives of America’s young farming community. Exploring the young farmers’ spirits, needs and practices, “The Greenhorns” shows that the rewarding benefits of agricultural skills are available to everyone young and old. All ages welcome. No registration required. In the Auditorium.

Wee Scary Pajama Storytime Thursday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. Kids and parents: share a storytime together! Come dressed in your pajamas or your Halloween costume, bring your coziest stuffed animal buddy and enjoy an entertaining evening of not-too-scary tales. Appropriate for children ages 3 and up.

Thrilloween: Party for Ghouls and Goblins Saturday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. Be you a ghost or rainbow fairy, superhero or something hairy, visit the Montclair Public Scary-brary for a ghoulish Halloween party. Come dressed in your trick-or-treat best (or worst!) and make your own edible tombstone snack with Marianne Ciffer. There will be costume prizes and a special dance-along performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” led by performer Arthur Leon. Afterwards, we’ll haunt the Library with our very own Halloween parade! All ages welcome. In the Auditorium.

STORYTIMES

Babies in the Library Tuesday, October 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30. Newborns to 13 months at 10:30 a.m.; 13-23 months at 11:30 a.m. This lap program is designed to acquaint parents and caregivers with the resources available in the library for their children. Rhymes, songs, language activities, and board books will be introduced during each session. Make baby’s first library experience a special one. Children of all abilities are welcome.

Toddler Time Wednesdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24, & 31 at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Toddler Time is a special story time for two year-olds and the adults in their lives. Picture books, flannel board stories, and nursery rhymes are introduced during each session. Children of all abilities are welcome.

Mother Goose Thursdays, October 4, 11, 18, & 25 at 2:00 p.m. Mother Goose is designed to promote literacy among our preschool-aged patrons (children ages 3 to 6). In addition to picture books and flannel board stories, songs and puppets are also used to build upon children’s natural enthusiasm for books and reading. Children of all abilities are welcome.
