Lock Up Your Bicycles!

Rash of bike thefts continues in Montclair.

This just in from Lt. Scott Buehler at the Montclair Police Department: reports of vandalism, thefts from cars and, as has been typical lately, thefts of bicycles.

Theft from a Motor Vehicle

         On 7/20/10, a Montclair resident reported that his cell phone was stolen from his Honda CRV. According to the complainant, sometime between midnight and 8:00 a.m. on July 18, his Motorola Droid cell phone, valued at $600, was taken from his unlocked vehicle on Columbus Avenue. There are no suspects at this time.

Theft

            On 7/20/10 at approximately 11:25 a.m., police responded to a single family residence on Llewellyn Road on a report of a theft. The complainant stated that sometime between 8:00 p.m. on July 18 and 7:00 a.m. on July 19, a planter was stolen from the top step of her front porch. The total value of the planter and its contents was estimated at $35. There are no suspects at this time.

Bicycle Theft

            On 7/20/10 at approximately 3:15 p.m., police were dispatched to a single family residence on North Fullerton Avenue on a report of a theft. The complainant stated that her son placed his Razor scooter on the property's lawn on 7/18/10 at approximately 8:00 p.m. When he went to ride the scooter on July 20 at approximately 2:30 p.m., he realized that it was missing. The scooter was not secured prior to the theft. The scooter is valued at $50.

            The same complainant also reports that her son's Optimus Prime children's bicycle, valued at $150, was stolen from her front lawn on June 30. This bicycle was not chained prior to the theft on that date. There are no suspects at this time.

Theft

            On 7/20/10 at approximately 4:40 p.m., police responded to a single family residence on a report of a theft. The complainant stated that her landscape flower pot was taken from her front lawn sometime between 5:00 p.m. on July 18 and 11:30 a.m. on July 20. The flower pot, which weighed approximately forty to fifty pounds, had an estimated value of $800. There are no suspects at this time.

Vandalism

            On 7/20/10 at approximately 5:00 p.m., police responded to a multi-family residence on Central Avenue on a report of vandalism. The complainant reports that she discovered that someone had sliced a hole in the screen to her front door sometime between 10:00 p.m. on July 19 and 4:00 p.m. on July 20. Another resident at the same address reported that had vandalized his Toyota. The damage to the vehicle consisted of an approximately fifteen inch scratch along the length of the front passenger's side door.

Bicycle Theft

            On 7/20/10 at approximately 5:35 p.m., police were dispatched to a single family residence on Orange Road on a report of a stolen bicycle. The complainant stated that she left her bicycle unlocked in her driveway on July 20 at approximately 11:00 a.m. When she returned home at approximately 5:20 p.m., she discovered that it was missing, but that a blue Abyss BMX had been left on scene, presumably by the person that stole her bike. The stolen bicycle is described as a Trek mountain bike wrapped in black electrical tape and valued at $100. There are no suspects at this time.

Arrest  

            On 7/20/10 at approximately 6:00 p.m., police were patrolling in the area of the North Fullerton Parking Deck when they observed an individual coming from the area of the nearby bicycle rack riding a Ross bicycle. Due to the number of recent bicycle thefts, police questioned the individual regarding the bicycle. The male, later identified as Richard Davie, 29, of East Elmhurst, NY, stated that the bicycle given to him by a friend who resided on Glenridge Avenue. Davie then stated that the friend lived on Greenwood Avenue, but would not provide the name of the person.

            Davie was placed under arrest when it was learned that he had a warrant out of Montclair, with bail set at $1100 and Newark, with bail set at $500.

Vandalism

            On 7/20/10 at approximately 8:00 p.m., police responded to Greenwood Avenue on a report of vandalism. The complainant stated that sometime between 8:00 p.m. on July 19 and 7:45 p.m. on July 20, someone had the damaged one of the building's meter boxes. The damage consisted of the word "VASTOZ" written in purple spray paint. There are no suspects at this time.

Vandalism to a Motor Vehicle

            On 7/21/10 at approximately 7:50 a.m., police were dispatched to Essex Avenue on a report of vandalism to a motor vehicle. According to the complainant, she parked her Volkswagen Passat on the street on July 20 at approximately 7:00 p.m.. When she returned to the vehicle on July 21 at approximately 7:30 a.m., she discovered that orange paint was covering the majority of the windshield and parts of the roof and sunroof. There are no suspects at this time.
