MHS Students Warned To Stay Off Streets

Montclair High School students are walking in the middle of the streets surrounding the school, especially James Street, during lunch periods, prompting complaints from the public.

After only three days of school, high school administrators sent an email to parents and caregivers on Monday saying they've been contacted by the Montclair Police Department.

"The police have received numerous complaints from the public about the potential for serious injury to the students as well as the inconvenience and frustration to drivers navigating the area," the email said. "With the start of school, officers of the Traffic Division will be out in the area concentrating on this issue. They will be giving warnings to the students as well as issuing summonses."

Under the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Code, the following summons will be issued: Failure to use sidewalks where provided.

The cost of the infraction is $54 with a mandatory court appearance. 

In the email, Principal James Earle also reminded MHS students to be good neighbors and to dispose of trash in the containers provided around the school.

"Be respectful of private properties and to the residents surrounding the school, especially on your way to and from lunch," he said.
