Montclair First Responders Help Residents Escape House Fire

A Montclair resident called the fire department when they spotted flames and smoke coming from a neighbor's house.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair emergency responders helped residents at a Gordonhurst Avenue home escape a fire on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

According to the Montclair Fire Department, a resident on the block reported seeing flames and smoke coming from a neighbor’s house at 5:18 p.m. There were possibly residents in the home, they said.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found “heavy fire and smoke” coming from the third floor of the house. Firefighters entered the home and removed two residents with assistance from Montclair police officers.

Firefighters then made their way to the third floor and extinguished the blaze, authorities said.

A firefighter suffered a minor injury. There were no reported civilian injuries, authorities stated.

The home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage to the third floor, as well as smoke and water damage to the floors below, officials said.

Units from Clifton, Bloomfield and West Orange helped to bring the fire under control, while units from Cedar Grove, Orange and Verona covered the township for the duration of the incident. The last units cleared the scene at 8:02 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, authorities said.
