Montclair High, MNDC Launch Student Support Plan

The Project Oasis Student Support program designed to provide mentoring, structured learning to suspended students

Montclair Public Schools and Montclair Neighborhood Development Corp. announced a pilot program called Project Oasis, to provide mentoring and a structured learning environment to suspended Montclair High School students or others in need of alternative educational settings.

The program provides certified counselors, mentors and district approved substitute teachers to work with students during their suspension period. The program includes a wide range of activities, including school assignments, counseling, personal development, life skills and physical education.

“By coming together, listening to each other’s ideas and focusing on solutions, Montclair has built an innovative and needed support program for our community,” said Penny MacCormack, superintendent of Montclair Public Schools.

Al Pelham, executive director of MNDC, said the program is designed to put suspended students into a supportive learning environment, instead of keeping them at home doing nothing that will further their education.

“Each of us has the responsibility to ensure every one of our children has the opportunity to grow and succeed,” Pelham said.
