Montclair Obituary: Peter Perretti Jr., Civil Attorney, Local Volunteer

The longtime Montclairite was active in First Congregational Church, The Montclair Art Museum, Bloomfield College and the Salvation Army.

Montclair resident Frank Lisante passed away on Feb. 28.

“Longtime Montclair resident Peter Perretti Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 27. He was 84.

“One of New Jersey’s top civil litigators, Peter was a senior partner at Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland and Perretti. In 1989 he was appointed state Attorney General by Governor Thomas Kean. His counsel was sought by numerous state officials and several governors and Peter was a valued mentor and friend to many young attorneys.

“Peter loved Montclair and was active in the First Congregational Church, The Montclair Art Museum, Bloomfield College and the Salvation Army. In the 1960s and 1970s he served on the Board of Montclair Kimberley Academy and as Chairman of the Board was an architect of the merger of Montclair Academy and The Kimberley School.

“A loving family man, he and his wife Ruth raised their children on South Mountain Avenue. Together they enjoyed gardening, travel to Europe, their farm property in Frelinghuysen Township, summer trips to Lake Geneva Wisconsin, and time with his many friends.

“Peter leaves behind his wife Ruth, children Peter, Earl and Ruth, sister Serena, three grandchildren, extended family and many friends. He will be dearly missed, but lived a long, accomplished and happy life.

“In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army.”
