9/9/14: A caretaker at Van Vleck Gardens, 21 Van Vleck Street, reported vandalism that took place between 3 p.m. Sept 5 and 9 a.m. Sept. 8. The suspect carved four letters into a European beech tree in the gardens. Anyone with information is asked to call the Juvenile Aid Bureau at 973-509-4751.

Found/Stolen Bikes

9/9/14, 1:53 p.m.: Police recovered a a red boys Mongoose brand Mode 90 bike from Glenfield Park. Anyone with information about the owner may contact the Juvenile Aid Bureau.

9/10/14, 11:45 a.m.: A resident of Upper Mountain walked in on a subject removing his bicycle from the garage of his home. The suspect attempted to flee when the man confronted him on the street. The man returned the bike and walked away south on Upper Mountain Avenue. The suspect is described as a black male, 23 to 35 years old, 6’1” in height, approximately 205 lbs, with a short haircut and short beard. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective L. 9/10/14: Police recovered a blue/white Trek brand bicycle on North Fullerton Avenue. Anyone with information about the owner may contact the Juvenile Aid Bureau.

9/10/14: Police recovered a green Chaos brand FS20 BMX bicycle on Elmwood Avenue. Anyone with information about the owner is asked to contact the Juvenile Aid Bureau.

9/10/14: A Walnut Crescent resident reported her bike stolen from a detached garage between the hours of 6 p.m. Sept. 10 and 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11. The bicycle is described as a white/black 12-Speed Diamond brand mountain bike. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Juvenile Aid Bureau.

9/13/14: An officer on patrol near Valley Road and Watchung Avenue saw three juvenile males in the backyard of a residence. When the officer approached, the three fled on bikes. The officer managed to apprehend one of the suspects on Erwin Park Road and found that all three were in possession stolen bicycles. The Juvenile Aid Bureau is investigating the matter.

9/13/14, 1:10 a.m.: Officers arrested Robert Morton, 25 of Montclair, for stealing a men’s Shogun Shockwave 2600 mountain bicycle from the Exxon gas station on Bloomfield Avenue. Police spotted Morton riding away from the service station on the stolen bicycle. He was arrested without incident and charged with theft. He was later released on his own recognizance.

Montclair Police is reminding residents that all bikes owned in the township are to be registered under township ordinance. The registration system assists the police in identifying lost or stolen bikes. For further information or help with registration services, contact the Community Service Unit at 973-509-4775.

Theft from a vehicle

9/10/14, 3:49 p.m.: The owner of a vehicle parked in the parking deck at 1 Greenwood Avenue discovered that it had been entered via a window that was shattered and items were stolen. The vehicle was described as a gray Nissan SUV. Items stolen were a Dell laptop, computer peripherals, and $1,800 in cash. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Detective C. Cunningham at 973-509-4716.

9/11/2014, 5:10 p.m. - 6:20 p.m.: The owner of a vehicle parked on Draper Terrace noticed that the unlocked silver Honda Accord had been entered and items were stolen. Items stolen were a 17” Hewlett Packard laptop in a gray canvass bag. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Juvenile Aid Bureau at 973-509-4751.

9/12/14, 8:55 p.m.: A resident of Riverview Drive observed three suspects entering his vehicles. He spotted one of them in the passenger seat of his Toyota SUV. The homeowner yelled at the suspects who then fled on foot toward Alexander Avenue. The suspects are described as white males wearing white T-shirts and shorts. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle. Those with information on the incident are asked to contact the Juvenile Aid Bureau.
