MONTCLAIR, NJ — A Montclair restaurant is taking a gutsy leap at expansion in an attempt to not only survive, but expand during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ilson Goncalves the chef and owner of Samba Montclair, has become known for introducing Brazilian fare to North Jersey from his Park Street restaurant. His culinary philosophy is simple: “If I don't eat it, it's not on the menu.”

Since launching in 2010, Goncalves, who has been diagnosed with celiac disease, has made his restaurant 100 percent gluten-free. He’s also gained some buzz with his pledge to offer a “fully authentic Brazilian farm-to-table experience” featuring locally sourced organic meats and produce.

But Goncalves may soon become known for another bold move – taking a business gambit during a time of unprecedented financial crisis.

The restauranteur said that expanding next door will allow him to nearly triple his exterior capacity, creating new areas for events and parties. Construction on the new space is currently underway.

In the meanwhile – as the state awaits Gov. Phil Murphy’s permission to reopen indoor dining – guests can grab a bite to eat at Samba Montclair via takeout or delivery. In accordance with the governor’s orders, the restaurant has also opened a sidewalk patio, which can seat up to 32 people.

“I believe in moving forward, and always reinventing myself,” Goncalves said, noting that he had to sell his house to survive the recent downturn in business.

“I'm determined to keep going and make the best of this great opportunity amid all the sadness and change,” he added.
