Montclair Shelter Offers Free Barn Cats As Euthanasia Alternative
The Montclair Animal Shelter's Barn Cat program is a "humane, practical alternative to euthanasia" for community cats, staff say.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Sometimes – despite best efforts – a “community cat” can’t be placed with a forever home. But there’s a humane, practical alternative to euthanasia, according to the Montclair Animal Shelter: their Barn Cat program.
The municipally run shelter recently announced that it’s offering free barn cats to people who can offer the “free-roaming” felines a place to live out their lives in relative security and comfort.
According to shelter staff:

“Montclair Township Animal Shelter ‘Barn Cats’ and ‘Back Yard Buddies’ are feral, un-socialized or free-roaming cats (also called ‘Community Cats’) who cannot be placed in a home environment. Placing them as outdoor cats in barns, sheds, garages or other outdoor structures is a humane, practical alternative to euthanasia. Barn Cats and Back Yard Buddies discourage rodents, provide companionship for horses and other farm animals, and can live out their lives in relative security and comfort.”
Here’s how the MTAS program works, shelter staff wrote:
“If you can provide shelter, and a regular supply of food and water, a Barn Cat or Back Yard Buddy may be ideal for you. These cats are FREE of charge and are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and treated for parasites.”
The program is not limited to New Jersey residents, the shelter wrote. Those interested in adopting a Barn Cat or Back Yard Buddy can contact the Montclair Township Animal Shelter at mtas@montclairnjusa.org or 973-744-8600.
