Upper Montclair Station faces move to change status
NJ Transit gets state officials to request change in historic status following 2006 fire

Montclair officials will discuss a plan by NJ Transit to seek the removal of the Upper Montclair Railroad Station to from the state and National Registers of Historic places, at tonight’s meeting of the Montclair Historic Preservation Commission.
The NJ Historic Preservation Office sent a Jan. 8 letter to Mayor Robert Jackson and other officials informing them of the request.
NJ Transit confirmed today that it made a request to have the station removed from the state and federal historic registries following a 2006 fire that destroyed the original structure, according to spokesman William Smith.

He said the renovations have so altered the original structure, that the station no longer qualifies for historic preservation status.
The case is scheduled to go before the State Review Board on March 12, according to a spokesman for the Department of Environmental Protection.
