In one event, Mount Hebron Middle School is seeking to achieve a goal of NO CARS AT DROP OFF! The PTA is asking students and parents to celebrate the benefits of walking and bicycling! And don’t forget to thank your crossing guards with a card, drawing, coffee or hug! There will be goodies for all participants.

The reason Montclair schools promote biking and walking to school is to prevent the national epidemic of childhood obesity. About 30 years ago, most kids walked or biked to school. Today the number is less than 10 percent. More importantly, studies show students who walk or bike to school arrive more alert and ready to learn. And it's FUN!

How can we have one day with no cars in the drop-off line? Walk, bike or bus to reduce traffic, make less pollution and be totally healthy.

The Mount Hebron PTA offers these tips for those walking and biking: Be VISIBLE and PREDICTABLE! Cyclists must wear helmets and follow road rules: ride on the right, in a straight line, signal stops and turns, and be courteous. Walkers stay on the sidewalks and cross at intersections.

Be sure to watch this seven-minute video called Enjoy the Ride!

Have fun and be safe!
