Just Updated Again: List Of Fall After-School Classes For Kids

Montclair residents are spoiled for choice.

With the arrival of the new school year comes a wide range of options for after-school and weekend activities. Indeed, choices are everywhere, which can be liberating for some — but stressful for others. To help, here's a guide highlighting a few of the classes starting in September — a list we'll be expanding as time goes on. And, please, feel free to add your own suggestions as well!

-- The Adult School of Montclair has loads of Parent/Child classes for the fall. There's Halloween Cookie Decorating and a class on making your own pizza, among others. Check out the wide range of classes here. Also, there is the following event coming up — Tchin, Performing Artist: Magic of Native American Storytelling and Flute Playing: Experience Native American culture with Tchin, a nationally known artist and teacher of Indian arts, music and culture. Tchin will share Native American stories that explain the creation of the world and how things came to be. Children ages 6-13 and their parents will enjoy the tales told by a storyteller recognized by PBS as one of the outstanding Native American artists in the United States.  Offered in partnership with the Montclair Public Schools. Tchin, a Blackfoot-Narragansett, is an award winning story teller and artist.  1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., November 13 at Charles Bullock School on Washington Street in Montclair, $10 parent/child pair, $5 each additional child (registration for additional children must be done over the phone at 973-746-6636.

-- Bass Arts Studio classes. This studio offers classes in painting, drawing and mixed media, sculpture, digital photography, while also boasting an extensive fashion program headed up by Fabiola Arias, a young and rapidly rising fashion designer. Bass Arts is currently gearing up for its fall session, which begins September 20. Check out the classes and find out more about registration here.

-- Kindermusik starts classes the week of September 20, with music and movement classes for newborns through age 7. Schedule and registration forms can be downloaded from unioncong.org or kindermusik.com.

-- Montclair Art Museum classes. Registration for fall classes opened on Monday, August 30. This year's offerings include everything from oil painting for teens to claymation for tweens. Classes generally run for 10 weeks starting September 20. There also are a wide range of adult classes too. Coming soon: the launch of a new Ceramic Studio on the grounds at MAM. Classes will be offered for kids, teens, and adults. Look for these new classes in the winter education brochure. For information on fall classes, go here.

-- Montclair Township Recreation announces Flag Football for boys and girls ages 5 to 9. Registration began September 7, and continues until the program is full — space is limited. The fee is $60. The Flag Football season begins in September and ends early November. Games and Practices are held Monday-Friday at Kaveny Field. Flag Football will be divided into two leagues: Pee Wee Tiny Flag ages 5 to 7 and Midget Flag ages 8 and 9. Download application form here.

-- Jazz House Kids classes. Got a budding jazz musician or singer in your household? Registration is underway for Jazz House Kids fall classes starting the week of September 13. Classes are held at 14 South Park Street in Montclair. Jazz House Kids offers several classes of ensembles, a youth vocal choir, and a new Jazz House KidsBig Band class. New students are placed in an appropriate level ensemble class based on an informal audition. New for this semester is a children's non-ensemble introduction to jazz class called Jazz Fun 101. -- French lessons. The Montclair Historical Society has entered into a partnership with The French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF) based in New York City. FIAF's Language Center now offers a selection of ongoing French classes. Group classes are offered for adults, kids, and teens, and private lessons are also available upon request. All classes are taught by highly trained native speakers of French who come from all over the Francophone world, and are fully certified to teach French as a foreign language. -- Montclair United Soccer Club. Registration for Recreation League soccer is now open. Register before Septemer 12 to receive a $15 Early Bird discount at check out for each season. If you register for both fall and spring now, you will receive an additional $15 discount at check out. Go here for more information.

-- Toddlers in Motion offers a wide range of classes in art, music, dance, and even Spanish. Located at 67 Church Street in Montclair, you can call 973-783-1537 to reserve a space at the Open House on Thursday, September 9. Classes run from Sept. 16 through Nov. 18. Go here for more information.

-- Gymnastika in West Patterson offers an array of gymnastics classes for children starting at 24 months of age. The first session begins Sept. 6. Go here for your registration form and more information.

-- The Little Gym of Montclair at 1 Greenwood Avenue has classes starting Sept. 6 for infants to 12 year olds. You can register online by going here.

-- StudioKids offers art classes for kids, teens, and adults. Fall classes begin Sept. 20 and most sessions run 10 weeks. Check out the new schedule here.

-- Rock Paper Scissors plans to post a fall class schedule soon. The popular craft store at 15 Bloomfield Avenue plans to introduce after-school programs as well as Saturday classes for kids. The store also plans to expand its offerings for adults during the day, evenings, and weekends. Keep checking here for the schedule.
