MOORESTOWN, NJ — The difference is only 5 mph, but it could make a world of difference. Moorestown Council introduced a proposed ordinance Monday night to lower the speed limit on Borton Landing Road from 45 mph to 40 mph between Hartford Road and Creek Road.

The speed limit change would make the area consistent with the speed limit of 40 mph from Westfield Road to Hartford Road, according to Moorestown Police Chief Lee Lieber.

The speed limit was set at 45 mph at a time when the area was more rural. However, development in the area has been growing over the past few years, and Lieber believes it is time for the speed limit to catch up with what has been built in the area.

“The time has come to make it more consistent,” Lieber said. “ … We’ve had numerous complaints from residents, and we conducted a traffic survey that concluded the speed limit should be lowered.”

“I see how fast people go, and when there’s an accident, it’s very bad,” Deputy Mayor Brian Donnelly said.

Council approved the proposal on introduction with a 5-0 vote during Monday night’s council meeting at town hall. The public hearing and final vote is set for the Feb. 10 meeting.
