South Jersey’s most famous athlete and one of the best players in Major League Baseball is reportedly about to sign the biggest contract in professional sports history.

Mike Trout, 27 of Millville, is working with the Los Angeles Angels to finalize a 12-year-deal that will pay him more than $430 million, sources told ESPN. The two-time American League MVP will earn nearly $36 million a year. Zach Greinke previously held the record with $34.4 million a year on average with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The team had not yet announced a deal as of Tuesday afternoon.

It also surpasses the Phillies' $330 million deal with Bryce Harper. The deal would put an end to any rumors of Trout coming home to play for the Philadelphia Phillies. In addition to Harper, the Phillies signed All Star catcher J.T. Realmuto, All Star shortstop Jean Segura, former MVP Andrew McCutchen, and elite reliever David Robertson. Trout has two years left on his contract with the Angels, but this deal extends that 10 more years with reports of no opt-out option.

Harper openly recruited Trout, and fans were hopeful the outfielder from Cumberland County would come home. Trout loves the area, telling NBC late last year he loves going to Eagles games and being with Philadelphia fans.

It now looks like Trout will not only surpass Harper’s big signing, but surpass boxer Canelo Alvarez’s $365 million deal for 11 fights, according to CBS Sports.

In 2017, Audubon’s Joe Flacco topped nj.com’s list of highest paid athletes from New Jersey, with career earnings of $135 million. Trout was fourth on the list that year.

Trout graduated from Millville High School in 2009 after a career in which he set a New Jersey record with 18 home runs and threw a no-hitter his junior year, according to The Press of Atlantic City.

He was drafted by the Angels with the 25th pick in the 2009 draft. After spending his first few years in the minor leagues, he was called up to the Angels and was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 2012. He was the league’s MVP in 2014 and 2016.

The 6'2," 235-pound right-hander has 1,187 career hits, 240 career homers, 648 RBIs and a batting average of .307 as a major leaguer, according to Baseball Reference.
