Monarch Butterfly Workshop In Moorestown Sunday

The Curtis Family will return for the second straight year to present the workshop Sunday evening.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — The Friends Enrichment Program of Moorestown Meeting (FEP) will host a monarch butterfly workshop hosted by Marlton residents and monarch butterfly aficionados Candy and Glenn Curtis and their teenage son, Sean, this weekend. It will take place on Sunday, Aug. 19, 3 p.m. in the Friends Meetinghouse.

The event is a unique opportunity for participants to observe at close range monarch butterflies at all stages of their lives—from egg to caterpillar to the chrysalis inside which the body of the caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis.

As the chrysalis splits, the butterfly emerges, wet, crumpled, and exhausted. Before it can attempt to fly, it must pump fluids into its body and wings. When ready to take off, full-fledged butterflies will be released to the open skies.

This is the Curtis family’s second monarch butterfly presentation to FEP. Nearly 10 years ago, when Sean began developing a keen interest in monarch butterflies, his supportive parents began growing milkweed in their yard.

Their goal was to create a habitat for monarch butterflies, whose females deposit their eggs almost exclusively on the leaves of milkweed plants. The family’s efforts paid off. Today, the handsome migrating pollinators thrive in their yard and the Curtis Family is part of a growing effort to help the monarch butterflies survive in an increasingly hostile world.
