Moorestown Hardware Feels Love From Town Amid Pandemic

Moorestown residents continue to support the small business during the pandemic, and the store has been there as an essential business.

MOORESTOWN, NJ — During the coronavirus pandemic, local businesses have needed the help of residents more than ever. In Moorestown, one business that has roots dating back to 1923 has seen the town rally to its side. And it's been there for the residents since things turned upside down in March.

“We’ve seen more people who want to stay local than in the past,” said Pete Bender, owner of Moorestown Hardware on 300 Mill Street. “We’ve had customers thank us for being open, and that makes us want to work harder. We’ll do whatever we can for our customers because they deserve it.”

Bender bought the store in 2001, but it’s had a presence in Moorestown for nearly 100 years. It opened as McChesney’s Hardware on Main Street, but moved to Mill Street in 1975. It’s small with the charm of an old-time hardware store.

It has an old soda machine inside and usually offers free popcorn on Saturdays, although that’s been temporarily halted amid the pandemic. Bender said he has had to change the way he does business some, including instituting side-door pickup. People have called-in, emailed or sent photos of their orders via text message.

Customers wear masks and are asked to practice social distancing. There is a capacity limit, but it never really seems to be much of an issue. But Bender said he’s mostly been able to help residents maintain a sense of normalcy.

As a hardware store, they’ve been deemed essential and been able to remain there for customers throughout the pandemic.

“People tell us, ‘this is my happy place,’” Bender said. “That’s awesome. At a time like this, it’s nice to be part of that.”

When there really wasn’t much to do, people started doing more home renovations. Residents are really embracing the holidays, as well, raiding the store for their Halloween and Christmas decorations.

And through the help of the customers, the store hasn't had to lay off any employees.

"We've been able to keep everyone on," Bender said. "No one's suffered in our store."

Bender and his wife, Julie, were both born and raised in Moorestown, and they knew they wanted to do something to benefit and be part of the community.

“COVID’s really emphasized how unique our customers are,” Bender said. “We’re very appreciative of them. Without them, we’ve got nothing.”
