NJ Weather: Severe Thunderstorm Watch; Winds, 27K Lose Power

NEW JERSEY — A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for all 21 New Jersey counties on Monday, and 60-mph winds and hail had already reportedly arrived. More than 27,000 were without power during the afternoon (see list of towns below).

Ping-pong-ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts were expected. People and animals outdoors could get injured, according to the National Weather Service.

Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows and vehicles. Wind damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines is also possible. The watch was expected to remain in effect until 11 p.m. Monday night.

A Flash Flood Emergency is in effect for the northern Philadelphia area and adjacent portions of New Jersey. Life-threatening flash flooding is taking place, and numerous water rescues are being reported. Drivers should stay off the road and move to higher ground if the flood waters threaten.

  • Monday afternoon: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 4 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 92. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Monday night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 p.m. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. Patchy fog after 2am. Low around 68. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m. Patchy fog before 8 a.m. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Tuesday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. South wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
